Clean January or how to make it thru a 14 day juice fast

Parris and I decided to dedicate January to our health, detox our system and loose those extra pounds we put on over the past 6 months. Since so many friends asked us what we are doing I thought it would be best to just post it on here.

On January 2nd, we started by eating a mostly raw and vegan diet.

We made juice with our Breville juicer every morning. Our favorite juices contain: 1 heart of celery, 1 big tomato, 1 apple, 1 lemon, 3-4 carrots (depending on size) and some kale or spinach. I also like some parsley in it or add some red beets. This juice will make you fell full for at least 2 hours and will kick start your day!

For lunch, we made salads with mixed greens, added some radish, cherry tomatoes, some cucumber and topped it off with some freshly roasted pumpkin or sunflower seeds. The dressing was only a tea spoon of olive oil and half a lemon squeezed over the salad. Sometimes, we added some diced tofu or avocado, depending on how hungry we were.

In the evenings, we steamed veggies in our wok. Parris and I both discovered bok choy for us and pretty much added it to every dish we prepared. Most of the times, we added one tea spoon of oil in the wok, tossed in half of a sliced onion, added 2-3 thinly sliced carrots (I also like to "shave" them with a veggie peeler, it looks really nice), added 2 hand full of mushrooms (either chinese mushrooms or champignons) and then added the bok choy. All of this will cook together (put a lid on) for tops 4 minutes. Then remove the lid, add about one ladle of veggie broth and steam for another 2 minutes with the lid on.
We usually also cooked some veggie chicken nuggets, veggie cutlets or some mexican style veggie ground beef in a separate pan and then served it with the veggies on a big plate.

I also love oyster mushrooms steamed in the wok with snow peas, add some semi firm diced tofu and steam for 4-6 minutes with a tea spoon of soy sauce. In the mean time dice an avocado and put in the bowl that you will eat the dish out of. Then add the steamed veggies, mix with the avocado and enjoy!

Other dishes were a red lentil and potato dish where I cooked diced potatoes in veggie broth, then added red lentils once the potatoes were almost soft. All of this simmered together for another 15 minutes and then I added skinned, diced tomatoes and just mixed them in. Serve right away.

As snacks, we discovered these amazing {Go Raw} bars for us. They are $3 which is reasonable for this afternoon snack and are super nutritious.

The point in this diet was really to stay way from processed foods, eliminate wheat products, rice and sugars. We eliminated all alcohol and only drank coffee once a day. Both of us already lost a significant amount of weight on this diet.

We ended up eating this way for 3 weeks before the juice fast. We both felt easing our way into the fast was the best idea as we both didn't crave empty carbs anymore.

On Sunday, January 22nd, we started our juice fast. We make fresh veggie juices 3 times a day and have them as our breakfast, lunch and dinner. We drink plenty of bottled water and tea (herbal and maybe once a day green tea) during the day. I went for a colonic at {Sana Vita} after 8 days to clean out my system a bit more. Parris takes Oxy-Powder capsules to support his digestion ("It's an exit, not an entry") and we both take probiotic capsules.

Today is day 13 of our fast, we both feel great, healthy, light and ready to continue a healthy lifestyle.
Parris has lost a total of 26lb since January 2nd and I lost 13lb so far. We both go to the gym together 3 times a week. We always work out our abs and do 40 minutes of cardio and alternate arms, legs and back (Parris adds chest to his workout, too).

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I will get back to you here!

To a happy, healthy 2012!
